America's smallest state is getting into the long line of states that are looking at increasing beer and other alcohol taxes as a way to boost revenue.
The Rhode Island General Assembly is expected to consider a bill this session introduced by Rep. Edwin Pacheco that would add a penny to the cost of each 12 ounce brew sold in the state. The money from the tax increase would go to fund alcohol treatment and education programs. Rep. Pacheco says that long waiting lists at treatment facilities need to be reduced.
Rhode Island estimates the tax increase will raise $2.3 million.
