Flying Saucer Draught Emporium Teams Up With Pints for Prostates for Belgian Beer Month

The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium is teaming up with Pints for Prostates during a four week “Belgian Beer Month” promotion designed to reach men through the universal language of beer. The 15-location family of beer pubs will generate prostate cancer awareness from June 27 to July 21as part of a salute to Belgian beer that will culminate in a drawing for a trip for two to Belgium.

Flying Saucer will raise funds during the event to support the Pints for Prostates awareness mission. Each Wednesday as part of its popular “Brewery Night,” the Flying Saucer will feature a different Belgian-style beer with the brand’s signature logo glassware. The first 144 people at each location will be able to get the glass of the week and a pour of the featured beer for a great price, with the price of the glass going to support Pints for Prostates. Each glass will come with a raffle ticket for a drawing for a special beer trip for two to Belgium from Sept. 7-15, 2012.

“We have hosted Pints for Prostates events at several of our locations in the past and we are excited to be working with them on this chain-wide awareness celebration,” said Keith Schlabs of the Flying Saucer. “Our ‘Beerknurds’ are big fans of Belgian ales. This opportunity to support a great cause and giveaway a beer adventure of a lifetime to Belgium will be a huge hit with our customers.”

The special Pints for Prostates Belgian Beer Tour is organized by BeerTrips.com. The raffle includes round trip airfare for two from the continental U.S.; seven nights lodging in Brussels, Brugge and Gent; tours of famous breweries, including Chimay, Cantillon and Moortgat; escorted cafĂ© crawls; guide city tours; breakfast daily, three beer dinners and two beer lunches; train and private coach transportation. For a $10 donation for a single ticket, $25 donation for three tickets or $50 for seven tickets, Flying Saucer patrons can obtain additional entries in the drawing. The total value of the trip for two is estimated at $6,500. The drawing will be held on July 21, at the Flying Saucer’s Charlotte location. The prize is non-transferable and no cash substitute will be offered. The winner and their guest are responsible for obtaining passports and all trip related costs not outlined above. You must be 21 years old to enter. No purchase is necessary.

Visit Flanders and Delta Air Lines are donating round trip tickets for the trip. Beer brands supporting the promotion at The Flying Saucer include Chimay, Blanche de Bruxelles, Timmermans and Maredsous.

“It is great to be working with The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium because they will help us reach thousands of men with a lifesaving message about the importance of early detection,” said Rick Lyke, a beer journalist who had successful prostate cancer surgery in 2008. “BeerTrips.com has put together a fantastic trip to Beer Heaven – Belgium – which we will appropriately award on July 21, Belgian Independence Day.”

BeerTrips.com has been providing unique beer travel experiences to destinations around the world since 1998. This special Pints for Prostates group tour to Belgium is limited to a total of 16 slots and is already sold out. The tour will be hosted by Lyke, the Pints for Prostates founder and a drinks journalist who has been writing about beer, wine and spirits for 30 years. He has visited Belgium several times and considers it one of the world’s top beer destinations. Pints for Prostates is a 501(c)3 charity that reaches men through the universal language of beer with an important health message.

“Men are 33 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer than women are to have breast cancer, yet few men know about the critical importance of early detection,” Lyke said. “The support of the Flying Saucer, Visit Flanders, Delta, Chimay, Blanche de Bruxelles, Timmermans and Maredsous will help us reach an audience that needs to hear our message.”

Elevation Prostator Smoked Doppelbock to be Released by Rare Beer of the Month Club™ to Support Pints for Prostates

Poncha Springs, Colo. – The newly launched Elevation Beer Co. of Poncha Springs, Colo., and The Rare Beer of the Month Club™, which ships unique craft beers nationwide, are teaming up on a special limited release beer to benefit the Pints for Prostates campaign.

Elevation’s Prostator Smoked Doppelbock is being brewed exclusively to create awareness and raise funds to support the mission of Pints for Prostates, which uses the universal language of beer to reach men with an important health message.

“This is an exciting project for our new brewery and we are proud to be partnering with Pints for Prostates,” said Christian Koch, Head Brewer and Co-founder at Elevation Beer Co. “Elevation Beer is located high in the heart of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Our plan is to build a reputation for brewing rare artisan beers. We are going to focus on adventurous specialty beers and barrel-aged seasonals that will appeal to craft beer fans like us.”

The limited edition beer features the Pints for Prostates logo on its label, which includes the blue ribbon to remind people of the ongoing search for a cure to prostate cancer, a leading cause of death among American men. A donation from every 750 milliliter bottle of Elevation’s Prostator Smoked Doppelbock sold will be made to Pints for Prostates.

“This is a rare beer that will help us deliver an important message. Pints for Prostates is all about getting men to take charge of their health and get screened for prostate cancer,” said Rick Lyke, a prostate cancer survivor who founded Pints for Prostates after successful prostate cancer surgery in April 2008. “Elevation Beer Co. and The Rare Beer Club™ teaming up for this project will catch the attention of men needing to hear our message. Plus, I’m a big fan of Bamberg-style smoked beers, so this is a real treat.”

When this very limited batch of Elevation’s Prostator is gone, it is gone. There are only three ways for beer lovers to try the unique beer:

· Join The Rare Beer Club online or call 800-625-8238 and be sure to start your membership in October or earlier. The ordering deadline for October is 10-15-12.

· Attend the Denver Rare Beer Tasting IV in Colorado on Oct. 12, where Elevation Beer Co. will be pouring samples of the brew alongside more than two dozen other great craft brewers offering extremely rare and exotic beers;

· Visit Elevation Beer’s tasting room at 115 Pahlone Parkway in Poncha Springs, Colo., on Oct. 27 when they will host a Pints for Prostates awareness event.

“This is the third year The Rare Beer Club™ has partnered with Pints for Prostates and each featured beer has been extremely well received by our members. I’m personally really excited about this unique style and being able to feature a smoked dopplebock in the club. This will be a highly anticipated release from a new brewery, so it’s sure to sell out quickly,” said President Kris Calef. “We’ll donate $1 for every bottle sold and include a Pints for Prostates coaster in each October shipment to remind our members to get tested. A little education and early detection goes a long way to save lives.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, prostate cancer claimed the lives of 33,700 men in the U.S. during 2011. Prostates cancer is 33 percent more common in men than breast cancer is in women, yet few men know they should start with regular prostate health screenings at age 40. Elevation’s Prostator Smoked Doppelbock release is part of the Pints for Prostates Oktoberfest for a Cure observance that is taking place from June 26 to Oct. 27 at venues across the U.S.

Tuesday Tasting: Wittekerke Wit Bier

Tuesday Tasting is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that explores some of the best beers, wines and spirits on the market. This week we sample "the white church."

Belgium has brought the world many beer styles. Hefty abbey ales, dubbels and triples, fruity lambics, and sour geueze usually grab most of the attention. But Wit or white beer is the delicate flower of the Belgian beer scene that fits perfectly when the weather starts to turn warm.

Brouwerij Bavik brews Wittekerke Wit Bier in Bavikhove, Belgium. The name means "white church" and it is also a village in Flanders.

Wittekerke Wit Bier is a 5 percent alcohol by volume beer that pours a cloudy yellow color with a creamy white head of foam. The beer has a very refreshing overall character. There is a touch of spice and citrus notes from the wheat and yeast used in the brewing. It's the kind of light beer perfect as a reward after some yard work.

Tuesday Tasting: Champagne Lanson Brut Rose

Tuesday Tasting is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that explores some of the best beers, wines and spirits on the market. This week we sample a sparkling rose from the Champagne region.

Champagne Lanson is a 252-year-old house that is relatively unknown in U.S. markets. Based in Reims, the brand has long been one of the top sellers in the United Kingdom. In addition to the Rose, Lanson Black Label Brut, Ivory Label Demi Sec and Gold Label Brut 2002 are being imported in the U.S.

Lanson Brut Rose is a pale pink color that has a flowery aroma. The flavor of this non-vintage Champagne has a fresh berry edge with an attractive level of acidity. Lanson uses 32 percent Chardonnay, 53 percent Pinot Noir and 15 percent Pinot Meunier. It is aged for three years. The makers credit non-malolactic fermentation with producing a fruit driven sparkling wine. This wine retails for $60 a bottle.

Tuesday Tasting: Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA

Tuesday Tasting is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that explores some of the best beers, wines and spirits on the market. This week we sample a white IPA from Bend, Ore.

Deschutes Brewery was founded in 1988 and has built a reputation for making some of the best assertive beers around. Hop Henge, The Abyss and The Diisident leap to mind. So a beer like Chainbreaker White IPA, with its subtle touches and bright flavors is refreshing twist.

Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA pours a cloudy light yellow color, with a whispy head of white foam. There is plenty of citrus aroma in this beer. The flavor shows the wheat, with spice and citrus running through the drink. Light, yet memorable.

Made with wheat and pilsner malt, Cascade and Citra hops, orange peel and coriander, Chainbreaker is 5.6 percent alcohol by volume and 55 IBU.

Tuesday Tasting: Redbreast 12 Cask Strength

Tuesday Tasting is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that explores some of the best beers, wines and spirits on the market. This week we sample a cask strength Irish whiskey.

Midleton Distillery in Cork is part of the Irish Distillers Group, which makes a number of famous Irish whiskeys, including Jameson, Powers and Midleton. They make Redbreast, a brand that was re-introduced in the 1990s.

The traditional Redbreast 12 is a single pot still whiskey that has racked up a truckload of awards in recent years, including the Whiskey Adovcate Award as Irish Whiskey of the Year in 2012 and the Malt Advocate Irish Whsikey of the Year title for 2011.

Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength has more flavor and vibrancy than you will experience with most Irish whiskeys. It is a rich amber gold color and the nose is sweet, with hints of apple and figs. The flavor is full with spices, apple and tropical fruit, finished with nice amounts of oak. The 115.4 proof is present, but not overpowering. If you have found most Scotch to be too assertive and most Irish whiskey to be too light, Redbreast might just hit your sweet spot.

Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength has a suggested retail price of $65 per 750 milliliter bottle.

Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve Sells for Record $94,000 at Benefit for SHFT Initiatives

Janet Sheed Roberts, at 110 years old, is the oldest person in Scotland. She is also the granddaughter of William Grant, who founded the Glenfiddich Distillery 125 years ago.

To celebrate Roberts' longevity the distillery created a special 11 bottle set of a 1955 single malt Scotch, marking each decade of her life. The company is auctioning off the whisky at special fundraisers and breaking records along the way. They have become the most expensive bottles ever sold at auction, according to Glenfiddich.

The first sold at Bonhams in Edinburgh in December for a record-breaking $72,630, topping the previous world record of just under $47,500 for a bottle of single malt. The second was bought by an anonymous bidder at the Honourable Artillery Company in London at an event hosted by HRH Prince Harry for $69,500.

On Friday, a bottle of Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky sold for $94,000 on New York's Liberty Island at a fundraiser for SHFT Initiatives, which promotes sustainability issues through the intersection of commerce, art and design, and communication. The event was hosted by Adrian Grenier, who played Vincent Chase in the HBO series Entourage.

Tuesday Tasting: Westbrook Vanilla Tree Dubbel

Tuesday Tasting is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that explores some of the best beers, wines and spirits on the market. This week we sample a Belgian-style beer from a South Carolina brewery.

Westbrook Brewing is a relatively new craft brewery in Mount Pleasant, SC., just across the bridge from the historic city of Charleston. The brewery has quickly gained the attention of craft beer drinkers in the southeast.

Westbrook Vanilla Tree Dubbel is a Belgian-style dark ale brewed with a crystal malts and dark Belgian candi syrup. Whole vanilla beans and toasted oak chips are added to the beer during aging.

The beer pours a reddish brown with a firm tan head. The beer has a malty nose and the flavor has plenty of body, with hints of dark fruit, malt and solid vanilla notes. Not as heavy as some Belgian-style ales.

German Chancellor Merkel Gets a Beer Shower

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was attending the annual Ash Wednesday meal held by the Demmin Christian Democratic Union in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania when a 21-year old waiter, identified only as Martin, became an instant You Tube phenomenon.

Merkel had just arrived at her table when Martin rushed over with a tray of cold beers, making sure he served one of the world's most powerful women first. He later told reporters he was a last minute substitute for a female waiter who was too nervous to serve the German leader's table. Five glasses of lager end up on Chancellor Merkel's back, but she hardly reacts.

Merkel raised a toast to the table and later gave a speech to the gathering. I guess if you spend enough time in German beer halls you have to expect the occasional beer shower.

Pints with Presidents

Which leader of the free world would you like to hoist a pint with at your local pub?

President’s Day is Monday, Feb. 20. TapHunter.com and Pintley.com surveyed more than 3,000 U.S. craft beer drinkers asking them “Which American President would you most like to share a beer with?”

The results were:

1. Bill Clinton (22.4%)
2. Barack Obama (15.5%)
3. Abraham Lincoln (14.9%)
4. George Washington (14.5%)
5. John Kennedy (10.2%)
6. Ronald Regan (7.7%)
7. George W. Bush (3.6%)

Missing from the list are two presidents that knew a thing or two about beer: Thomas Jefferson, who brewed at Monticello, and Franklin Roosevelt, who lifted the tyranny of Prohibition. Jimmy Carter, who signed the bill that exempted homebrewed beer from excise tax, is also missing from the list.

Oddly, George W. Bush makes this list even though he is said to have stopped drinking long before entering the White House. Abraham Lincoln might also raise some eyebrows, since he implemented the first tax on beer to help fund the Civil War.

Tuesday Tasting: Two Beers from Bodebrown Brewery in Brazil

Tuesday Tasting is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that explores some of the best beers, wines and spirits on the market. This week we sample a pair of brews from a Brazilian microbrewery.

Bodebrown Brewery is located in Curitiba, the state capital of Parana in Brazil. The microbrewery features a school, homebrew supply store and a small library to help the local beer community. Bode means "goat" in English and the brewery's name salutes the founders' grandfather who raised goats in the northwest of Brazil

Paulo de Tarso Cavalcanti of Cervejaria e Escola Bodebrown brought some of his beers to the Raleigh Rare & Vintage Beer Tasting last weekend. The event was held at Tyler's Restaurant and Taproom and raised funds for the Pints for Prostates campaign.

Bodebrow Strong Scotch Ale Wee Heavy is 8 percent alcohol by volume. The beer won a gold medal at the Mondial de La Bierre in Montreal in 2011. The beer pours a reddish brown with a off white head. There is a nice caramelized malt base to this beer with just a faint hint of smoke in the background. The mouth feel is not as heavy as some other wee heavy Scotch ales on the market.

Bodebrown Perigosa Imperial Milk Stout comes in a couple of strengths. The beer getting most of the crowd noise at the event in Raleigh was the 21 percent alcohol by volume giant that is aged in Hungarian oak and former Bourbon barrels. The beer is a thick black pour with a minimal head. There is a sweet and roasted nose that opens up as the beer warms slightly. The beer is full flavored with tons of dark fruits, wood and chocolate throughout. The high alcohol content is not a major component of the flavor.

An advocate for beer for 15 years, he organized numerous beer events in his hometown in 2011. The past year was highlighted by a research project in which he fasted for 46 days on water and a dopplebock he brewed with a local brewery. It became a book, Diary of a Part-Time Monk. His home beer bar: El Bait Shop, Des Moines, Iowa.

Belgian Post Honors Trappist Brewers on Stamps

Belgium is the home of six of the world's seven Trappist breweries. Belgian Post recently issued a special set of stamps to recognize these amazing Belgian beers.

The stamps feature bottles, caps and glasses filled with Achel, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren.

It is not the first time that postal officials in Belgium have celebrated the national drink with special stamps.

A total of 174 Trappist monasteries exist worldwide.  Six in Belgium and one in the Netherlands still brew beer and are approved to use the Authentic Trappist Product logo that indicates compliance with the rules of the International Trappist Association. Originally, Trappist monks brewed for the needs of the monastery. Now money raised through the sale of beer fund good works.

Tuesday Tasting: 21st Amendment Bitter American Session Ale

Tuesday Tasting is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that explores some of the best beers, wines and spirits on the market. This week we sample a session beer from San Francisco.

21st Amendment Brewery is a California brewery that many people know because of its High or Hell Watermelon Wheat and as one of the craft breweries that was an early adopter of cans.

21st Amendment Bitter American Session Ale is a 4.4 percent alcohol by volume beer that is 42 IBU thanks to the Warrior and Cascade hops used in the boils and the dry hopping by Simcoe and Centennial hops. The brewery uses Simpson's Golden Promise, two-row pale, Munich and Crystal malts.

Bitter American pours with bright new penny color with a substantial head. The aroma is a fresh pine base with hints of biscuit malt. The flavor is pretty smooth even with all of the hops that are packed into this one. Just right for a session beer.

Tuesday Tasting: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

Tuesday Tasting is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that explores some of the best beers, wines and spirits on the market. This week we sample a new whiskey from Brown-Forman.

The Labrot & Graham Distillery was brought back from the dead in 1996 thanks to the renewed interest in quality Bourbon. Located in Woodford County, about an hour outside of Louisville, in the midst of major thoroughbred horse farms the site was first used for a distillery in 1812 by Elijah Pepper. The facility changed hands several times before it became the Labrot & Graham Distillery. Brown-Forman acquired that company and in 1973, during a long slide in Bourbon sales, the company ended up abandoning the distillery. Twenty years later Brown-Forman was looking for a location to house a new premium spirits brand and the company re-acquired the property.

Under the leadership of Master Distiller Chris Morris the distillery has established the Woodford Reserve label as one of the leading premium American whiskey brands. The Bourbon has a grain bill of 72 percent corn, 18 percent rye and 10 percent barley.

The Woodford label has been used for some special releases and now Woodford Reserve Double Oak is the first permanent line extension. The whiskey uses barrels from the Brown-Forman Cooperage, maturing first in new, charred oak barrels, then moved to a second barrel which has been toasted for more than twice as long as the first barrel.

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is a deep amber color and has a honey-sweet and wood aroma with a hint of caramel. This whiskey has a long flavor profile. Classic vanilla and dark fruit notes dominate the taste, with bits of nut and spice notes. The finish is bright with a hint of pear skins.
